The recurring practice of government bodies unilaterally extending Income Tax filing deadlines, often at the eleventh hour and without applying due diligence or consulting the Chartered Accountant Body (ICAI) fraternity and senior legal tax consultants, has become a source of significant professional frustration and systemic inefficiency. While extensions are occasionally necessary to provide relief due to technical glitches or external crises, the manner in which they are often granted betrays a fundamental disregard for expert opinion and the complex operational realities of the tax ecosystem.

How relevant are government-set deadlines? Recently, the government extended a deadline by a day, nearly after it expired. Sometimes, extending deadlines is seen as a financial burden to the Government. This issue arises when the Finance Department operates like a pawn shop.
